The direct mill sourcing partnership

TurtleTales sources rice husk feedstock through direct partnerships with a small number of mill operators in the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu rice belt. The direct partnership model is deliberately chosen over aggregator sourcing or open market sourcing because it produces three operational outcomes that matter for procurement-grade documentation.

Feedstock traceability at the mill level. Every production batch of HuskMade cups can be traced back to the specific mill or small set of mills that supplied the rice husk for that batch. The traceability layer is the procurement-grade documentation artefact that B2B procurement teams can request as part of BRSR Scope 3 substantiation chains.

Specification agreements that determine feedstock preparation at the mill. Our supply agreements require the mill operators to prepare the husk to specifications before it leaves the mill — moisture content below approximately 12 percent, particle size distribution within a target range, contamination screening at the mill level. The preparation-at-source approach reduces variability in the downstream compound formulation stage.

Long-term pricing stability across the seasonal cycle. Our supply agreements structure pricing across the full annual cycle rather than at the spot-market price at each purchase point. Managing the seasonal supply cycle

The Indian paddy harvest calendar produces concentrated feedstock supply during October-November (Kharif harvest) and April-May (Rabi harvest). Timing of peak-season purchases. We concentrate feedstock purchasing during the peak harvest windows when supply is highest and pricing is most stable. The pre-purchased volume flows into our storage buffer for use across the between-harvest periods.

Supply agreement structure. Our supply agreements with the mill operators specify minimum annual volumes and delivery windows aligned to the harvest calendar. The agreements reduce the operational uncertainty on both sides — the mill operator has predictable annual demand, we have predictable annual supply.

Feedstock quality specifications

The rice husk that enters HuskMade production meets specifications across four dimensions. Moisture content below approximately 12 percent (higher moisture produces compound formulation problems in the downstream manufacturing stage). Particle size distribution within a target range after grinding (consistent particle size produces consistent material properties in the finished cup). Silica content within a specific window (the natural silica content in rice husk affects both processing behaviour and finished material properties). Contamination screening for foreign materials, chaff, and other non-husk agricultural material.

The specifications are set through the supply agreements with the mill operators. Mills that consistently meet the specifications are retained in the sourcing partnership. Mills that produce out-of-specification feedstock require corrective action or eventual replacement.

Traceability documentation available to procurement teams

Three documentation artefacts specifically related to feedstock sourcing available to B2B procurement teams on request.

Mill sourcing partnership documentation. Anonymised information about our current mill partnerships — number of mills, geographical distribution, sourcing volume per mill, partnership duration. What this means for procurement evaluation

First — what sourcing relationship structure does the vendor operate? Direct mill sourcing is procurement-grade defensible. Aggregator sourcing is workable with documentation of the aggregator relationships. Open market sourcing is not procurement-grade defensible.

Second — can the vendor produce feedstock traceability documentation? Vendors operating direct mill sourcing produce traceability documentation. Vendors operating through aggregators may or may not produce it depending on the aggregator's transparency. Vendors operating open market sourcing cannot produce it.

Third — how does the vendor manage the seasonal supply cycle? Vendors with storage capacity buffers and long-term supply agreements produce predictable pricing and consistent supply through the between-harvest windows. Vendors operating hand-to-mouth on peak-season purchases face pricing volatility that eventually surfaces in customer pricing.
